BUFFALO, New York ꟷ At least 26 people died so far during the lethal blizzard that tore through the Buffalo region beginning Friday, December 23, 2022. As of Christmas morning, reports cited accumulation of over 43 inches of snow in some areas. Hurricane force winds further complicated the disaster, causing power outages and widespread driving bans.

WIVB news quoted County Executive Mark Poloncarz who said victims were found in cars and snowbanks. One man passed away from carbon monoxide poising. A Facebook group formed for people to post emergency needs. Throughout the storm, citizens posted dozens of emergency alerts. They ranged from pregnant women going into labor and unable to get out of their homes, to freezing and hungry families.

On Twitter, Kate Glaser of Amherst, NY posted a photo of a Korean tour-group of ten people whose bus became stranded in front of her house. She took them in, and they can be seen gathered around the table.

On the other side of the news, Dave McKinley shared a video on Twitter of a Family Dollar which, among other retail outlets, was looted during the storm.

Heavy equipment and plows descended on the region on Christmas and Live Storm Chasers shared a video on Twitter of a machine moving abandoned vehicles.

As of Monday, December 26, 2022, a winter storm warning remained in effect for lake effect snowfall in southern Erie County. Some driving bans remained in effect, while other areas were downgraded to driving advisories. Thousands remained snowed in.
