Background Information<\/div>
According to Article 26(IV) of the Constitution of Kenya, abortion is prohibited and only allowed under special circumstances, like when the health of the mother is at risk. As times change more and more, Kenyan women are choosing to procure abortions even under harsh rules. This has led to unsafe abortions becoming a major cause of death and complications among women in Kenya.

Civil society organizations in Kenya have long advocated expanding women\u2019s rights to safe and legal abortion. Over time, feminist activists are also driving the change to advance bodily autonomy.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\n\n\n

NAIROBI, Kenia \ua7f7 Abort\u00e9 en julio de 2020. Aunque consult\u00e9 a mi m\u00e9dico en todo momento, nada me prepar\u00f3 para el proceso al que me enfrent\u00e9. Inmediatamente, ped\u00ed una cita con mi m\u00e9dico para hablar de un aborto<\/a>. Me sent\u00eda preparada mentalmente, pero no comprend\u00eda las implicaciones f\u00edsicas del proceso. Una mujer adopta un estilo de vida sin hijos y desaf\u00eda el estigma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meses despu\u00e9s, decid\u00ed tomar una decisi\u00f3n m\u00e1s permanente. Me somet\u00ed a un proceso llamado ligadura de trompas. En este procedimiento de esterilizaci\u00f3n, que en la mayor\u00eda de los casos es permanente, los m\u00e9dicos ligan las trompas de la mujer, evitando as\u00ed futuros embarazos. No quer\u00eda volver a pasar por un embarazo inesperado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Kenia, los abortos siguen estando muy restringidos, por lo que muchas mujeres los practican en secreto. Yo decid\u00ed abortar p\u00fablicamente. Antes de hacerlo p\u00fablico, notifiqu\u00e9 mi decisi\u00f3n a mis padres. Se sintieron infelices, pero sab\u00edan desde hac\u00eda tiempo que no quer\u00eda tener hijos. Esperaban que alg\u00fan d\u00eda cambiara de opini\u00f3n, pero no lo hice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El valor me impuls\u00f3 a llevar mi experiencia a la esfera p\u00fablica. Quer\u00eda tener autonom\u00eda sobre mi cuerpo y hacer saber a las mujeres que pasaban por circunstancias similares que no estaban solas. A lo largo del proceso, recib\u00ed muchos mensajes de hombres y mujeres que apoyaban mi decisi\u00f3n de ser sincera sobre un estilo de vida sin hijos. Algunos detallaban sus propias experiencias o incluso ped\u00edan ayuda para conseguir un aborto seguro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Kenia, el proceso sigue envuelto en el secreto y la verg\u00fcenza. Las mujeres son vilipendiadas y tachadas de asesinas, prostitutas y no aptas para el matrimonio. La sociedad nos hace creer que no tenemos derecho a decidir sobre nuestro cuerpo. Yo elijo un estilo de vida sin hijos (CF). Me da la libertad y el espacio para explorarme a m\u00ed misma y al mundo que me rodea al m\u00e1ximo. No tengo que dividir mi atenci\u00f3n y energ\u00eda entre mis propios esfuerzos y la crianza de otro ser humano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
