Mar\u00eda del Carmen la Paz is 86 years old. She was born in Montevideo, Uruguay and since 1983 she has been in charge of her Restaurante El Pasaje in Buenos Aires, Argentina. <\/div><\/div>

Breast cancer<\/a> is a disease caused by the abnormal multiplication of cells in the breast that form a malignant tumor. It can affect any woman. The chances of it appearing increase with age, especially after the age of 50. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina \ua7f7 Abrimos nuestro restaurante El Pasaje un s\u00e1bado de hace cuarenta a\u00f1os. En aquel luminoso d\u00eda de febrero, decidimos cocinar \u00f1oquis, un cl\u00e1sico de la cocina porte\u00f1a. El aroma inund\u00f3 todo el restaurante. Ese d\u00eda vino mucha gente a sentarse y disfrutar del ambiente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u00eda el tintineo de los vasos entre risas y ve\u00eda a los clientes deleitarse con la comida que probaban. Cuatro d\u00e9cadas despu\u00e9s, mi hermana Teresita y yo seguimos cocinando en El Pasaje. Yo tengo 86 a\u00f1os y ella 82. No hemos parado ni un minuto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mi vida no siempre se desarroll\u00f3 en torno al restaurante. A los 14 a\u00f1os empec\u00e9 a trabajar en una empresa de transportes en mi pa\u00eds, Uruguay. Reci\u00e9n en 1983, a los 43 a\u00f1os, me mud\u00e9 a Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n

Mi marido ten\u00eda un bar en Montevideo, as\u00ed que cuando emigramos, vendi\u00f3 el negocio y utilizamos el dinero para abrir nuestro nuevo restaurante. Nos enamoramos de la primera propiedad que vimos en Buenos Aires. Desde el momento en que cruzamos las puertas, supimos que era lo correcto. Regresamos a Uruguay para terminar de cerrar y el 24 de febrero de 1983 nos instalamos en Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los anteriores propietarios del restaurante nos presentaron a nuestra clientela, que con el tiempo se convirti\u00f3 en nuestros amigos. Esos primeros d\u00edas estuvieron marcados por la buena suerte. Comenz\u00f3 como un negocio familiar y sigue si\u00e9ndolo. Mi madre cocin\u00f3 hasta que muri\u00f3, y luego Teresita tom\u00f3 el relevo. Nunca cocin\u00e9 para nadie m\u00e1s que para mi familia, pero cuando mi marido falleci\u00f3, encontr\u00e9 mi lugar en el restaurante. Hoy, nunca salgo de la cocina de El Pasaje. Incluso cuando me pusieron un stent, \u00a1volv\u00ed a trabajar a los pocos d\u00edas!<\/p>\n\n\n

Aprendimos sobre la marcha para sacar adelante el negocio. nos abrimos paso en el complejo rubro de la gastronom\u00eda porte\u00f1a. Muchas cosas la pedimos para que lo traigan por encargo, como la carne, los huevos u otras materias primas. Tambi\u00e9n nos ayuda mi hijo con algunas compras de verduras y frutas en el Mercado Central.\nToda la comida de El Pasaje es casera. Hecha como si fuera para nuestra familia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las hermanas trabajan, viven y se enfrentan juntas al c\u00e1ncer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hace unos a\u00f1os, a Teresita y a m\u00ed nos diagnosticaron c\u00e1ncer. Ella se enter\u00f3 primero y tuvo que ausentarse del trabajo para recibir quimioterapia. Un d\u00eda, me dediqu\u00e9 a mis actividades habituales. De repente, un d\u00eda, sent\u00ed algo extra\u00f1o y encontr\u00e9 un peque\u00f1o bulto en mi pecho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enseguida fui al m\u00e9dico, me detectan c\u00e1ncer y al darme el diagnostico me dicen que no ten\u00eda muchas esperanzas.\nAunque que ten\u00eda cura, el tratamiento iba a ser muy largo, estaba muy grave.\n\u201cTal vez te tengan que sacar el seno\u201d Me dijo el m\u00e9dico, no s\u00e9 si vas a quedar pelada, por la quimioterapia.<\/p>\n\n\n

Y as\u00ed fue, qued\u00e9 pelada y la luc\u00eda sin inconvenientes ya que nunca le tuve miedo al c\u00e1ncer. Creo que las actividades f\u00edsicas y mentales curan las enfermedades. Ir al m\u00e9dico y hacerse revisiones sigue siendo necesario, pero ser activa ayuda a la recuperaci\u00f3n. Mi enfermedad me ayuda a seguir, ya que cuando estoy en movimiento y trabajando no pens\u00e1s en tu enfermedad pens\u00e1s solo en salir adelante, es importante que estemos activas y no pensar en cosas feas o en la muerte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con mi hermana vivimos juntas al lado del restaurante y compartimos todo el d\u00eda. casi no nos peleamos, apenas alg\u00fan debate por una receta nueva, somos optimistas en cuanto a mantenernos muchos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s al frente de nuestro restaurante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
