Noorja Majothi, a resident of Morbi, grew up in Kantipur with her five-member family. She lost her brother, his wife, their two children, and three members of her cousin’s family when the Morbi hanging bridge collapsed. The tragedy occurred on the eve of her engagement ceremony and many of the family members were in town for the celebration. Orato journalist Priyanka Chandani obtained the exclusive interview and worked with the family on background information. However, due to some technological challenges and the family’s extreme grief, she could not provide a subject photo.<\/div><\/div>
Background Information<\/div>
The hanging bridge in Morbi, India was touted as an archeological marvel, attracting many tourists to the site for years. The colonial-era bridge had only recently reopened after months of renovations.

According to news reports<\/a>, when the bridge collapsed, more thna 200 people had gathered on it. One hundred and thirty-five people died. At least nine people were subsequently arrested for culpable homicide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\n\n\n

MORBI, India \ua7f7 El domingo 30 de octubre de 2022, me desped\u00ed de nueve miembros de mi familia que fueron a visitar el puente colgante de Morbi, en la India. Una familia que asiste a una ceremonia de compromiso hace una r\u00e1pida excursi\u00f3n al puente colgante de Morbi para no volver jam\u00e1s.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Durante varios d\u00edas antes del accidente, preparamos con ilusi\u00f3n la ceremonia de compromiso en mi casa, donde mi prometido y yo celebrar\u00edamos nuestro futuro matrimonio con nuestra familia. Con la decoraci\u00f3n preparada, las carpas levantadas en el patio trasero, la henna aplicada en mis manos y la casa iluminada, empezaron a llegar invitados de ciudades de toda la India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Como parte de su visita, mi hermano, su mujer, sus dos hijos y la familia de nuestros primos decidieron hacer una excursi\u00f3n r\u00e1pida al puente colgante de Morbi, en el r\u00edo Machchhu. Se hab\u00eda convertido en una atracci\u00f3n en el pueblo, con gente que ven\u00eda de lejos para verlo. Acababa de reabrir tras 13 meses de mantenimiento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mientras me pon\u00edan la henna en las manos, mi sobrina entr\u00f3 corriendo pidiendo chocolate. Le dije que le traer\u00eda unos dulces en cuanto terminaran. Se lo promet\u00ed. Cuando mi familia se dispon\u00eda a marcharse, volvi\u00f3 a recordarme lo del chocolate. Me pidi\u00f3 que se lo trajera al volver del puente. Nunca volv\u00ed a hablar con mi sobrina. Solo una persona de las nueve regres\u00f3 aquella noche. Mi prima no subi\u00f3 al puente porque las alturas la mareaban. Vio morir a sus dos hijos ante sus ojos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El lugar de la ceremonia se convierte en un espacio funerario<\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Las carpas de mi patio, destinadas a nuestra fiesta de compromiso, sirven ahora de sombra para los ata\u00fades funerarios. En el mismo lugar donde mi prometido y yo nos habr\u00edamos sentado para nuestra ceremonia, cuatro ata\u00fades ocupan el espacio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aunque me sent\u00eda preparada para mi d\u00eda especial, tambi\u00e9n recuerdo la sensaci\u00f3n de que algo me inquietaba aquella ma\u00f1ana. Pensaba que ten\u00eda los nervios normales del compromiso, pero recuerdo que sent\u00eda que no quer\u00eda que mi familia fuera al puente Morbi. Quer\u00eda detenerlos, pero no me atrev\u00eda a perturbar la emoci\u00f3n de los ni\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mi hermano peque\u00f1o fue el primero en enterarse del derrumbe del puente y corri\u00f3 al lugar, mientras mi primo volv\u00eda a casa llorando. A mi hermano le llev\u00f3 horas de b\u00fasqueda rigurosa localizar a todos. Yo me qued\u00e9 en casa, esperando impotente un milagro. Cuando mi padre lleg\u00f3 al hospital, vio los cuerpos de mi hermano y mi sobrina tendidos all\u00ed. Durante varias horas m\u00e1s, trabaj\u00f3 para localizar el resto de los cuerpos. El m\u00e9dico le dijo a mi padre que el agua del r\u00edo donde se precipitaron al vac\u00edo estaba contaminada con productos qu\u00edmicos. Pensar en ello me inquieta.<\/p>\n\n\n

Nos enteramos por mi prima, que sobrevivi\u00f3 a aquel d\u00eda, que se qued\u00f3 gritando pidiendo ayuda mientras ve\u00eda c\u00f3mo los ni\u00f1os y otros miembros de nuestra familia perd\u00edan el control del puente. Vio c\u00f3mo el puente se derrumbaba y ca\u00eda al agua. Llorando desconsoladamente, sollozaba: \u00abLo he perdido todo\u00bb. Es lo \u00fanico que dice desde aquel d\u00eda. Como muchos de nosotros, ha dejado de comer y vive en estado de shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuando veo la ropa de mi hermano y los libros y juguetes escolares de los ni\u00f1os, pienso en su muerte. Cada minuto consume mi mente. Me siento culpable de que hayan venido a mi fiesta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pesar de su angustia, una mujer habla: exige castigo por el derrumbe del puente de Morbi<\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nunca olvidar\u00e9 la visi\u00f3n de los cad\u00e1veres que llegaban al hospital, uno tras otro. Perd\u00ed un hermano, una sobrina, un sobrino, una cu\u00f1ada, un cu\u00f1ado y la familia de mi primo. Mi hermana enviud\u00f3. El d\u00eda de mi compromiso, en lugar de celebrarlo, recogimos ocho cad\u00e1veres. Mi casa permanece en silencio. Ya no se oyen las voces alegres de los ni\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me pregunto a qui\u00e9n culpar. O\u00edmos que el gobierno nos dar\u00e1 alguna compensaci\u00f3n monetaria, pero nunca podr\u00e1 compensar nuestra p\u00e9rdida, este asesinato. Por culpa de la negligencia, nunca volver\u00e9 a ver a mi hermano; la persona que me serv\u00eda de lugar c\u00f3modo, que har\u00eda cualquier cosa por m\u00ed a pesar de sus limitados ingresos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahora mi hermano peque\u00f1o hace muchas preguntas y yo no tengo respuestas. Nadie las tiene. Quiero que se castigue a los responsables de esto. El ayuntamiento dice que sab\u00eda que el puente segu\u00eda siendo inseguro, pero las autoridades lo abrieron sin su permiso. Vemos dimisiones y protestas, pero nada traer\u00e1 de vuelta a mi familia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ha pasado un mes. Intento olvidar, pero siento que ser\u00eda mejor que todos muri\u00e9ramos. Mi casa est\u00e1 yerma. Todos lloran todo el tiempo. He hablado poco de este incidente, pero hablo ahora porque quiero que la gente sepa la verdad.
