INTERVIEW SUBJECT<\/div>
Pablo Fracchia<\/a> is a volunteer firefighter, activist, and member of the Red Cross. In 2016, he traveled to Lebanon for two months as part of a humanitarian mission with the Cascos Blancos<\/a> organization. He worked with Syrian refugees during the war. As soon as he turned 14, he knew he wanted to dedicate his life to helping others. He took part in the fight to pass the Equal Marriage Law, prompting him to think of fatherhood more seriously. At the age of 30, he adopted Mia.<\/div><\/div>
BACKGROUND INFROMATION<\/div>
According to the Human Rights Campaign<\/a>, 34 countries have legalized gay marriage. Countries that appear to be on the verge of enacting laws include the Czech Republic, India, Japan, Philippines, and Thailand. In many other countries around the world, according to the Council on Foreign Relations<\/a>, criminalize homosexuality. Some even impose a death penalty. Statista <\/a>provides a worldwide map of government regulation of adoption by LGBTQ+ individuals and couples.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\n

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – En los a\u00f1os noventa, la mayor\u00eda de la gente de mi comunidad consideraba que ser gay era vergonzoso, motivo de burla. De adolescente luch\u00e9 contra la culpa por ser as\u00ed, ocultando la verdad durante mucho tiempo. La familia hablaba con cari\u00f1o de mi bondad y me dec\u00eda: \u00abAlg\u00fan d\u00eda ser\u00e1s un gran padre\u00bb, pero yo no cre\u00eda que pudiera llegar a serlo. <\/p>\n\n

A los 14 a\u00f1os encontr\u00e9 mi destino: ayudar a los dem\u00e1s. Empec\u00e9 a trabajar en el Cuerpo de Bomberos Voluntarios y en la Cruz Roja. Aunque salir del closet como gay result\u00f3 dif\u00edcil, tambi\u00e9n ofreci\u00f3 la oportunidad de volcar ese voluntariado en organizaciones LGBTQ+. Se despert\u00f3 en m\u00ed la motivaci\u00f3n de dejar huella en el mundo.<\/p>\n\n

Juntos conseguimos que se aprobara la Ley de Matrimonio Igualitario<\/a> en Argentina. Con la adopci\u00f3n por fin como posibilidad, volv\u00ed a imaginarme como padre. Decidido a formar una familia, inici\u00e9 el proceso para adoptar un ni\u00f1o. Cuando Mia lleg\u00f3 a mi vida, lo sent\u00ed como un milagro.<\/p>\n\n

Por fin hago realidad mi sue\u00f1o de ser padre <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Esper\u00e9 alg\u00fan tiempo, con la esperanza de que apareciera en mi vida una pareja con la que adoptar un ni\u00f1o. Nunca lleg\u00f3 el momento y me cans\u00e9. Ser padre lo era todo para m\u00ed, as\u00ed que decid\u00ed seguir adelante por mi cuenta.<\/p>\n\n

Investigu\u00e9 el proceso sin descanso y consult\u00e9 a amigos que trabajaban en el sistema judicial. Necesitaba saber m\u00e1s sobre la adopci\u00f3n monoparental. Por la noche, le\u00eda formularios interminables y me imaginaba avanzando, pero el miedo me frenaba. Cuando por fin me anim\u00e9, rellen\u00e9 el formulario y lo dej\u00e9 en el Juzgado de Familia, encima de una torre de formularios. <\/p>\n\n

En cuanto sal\u00ed del edificio, las l\u00e1grimas empezaron a correr por mi cara. Despu\u00e9s de tantos y tantos a\u00f1os, por fin lo hice. Me entrevist\u00e9 con un representante que me dijo que adoptar a un ni\u00f1o mayor podr\u00eda acelerar el proceso. Lo acept\u00e9 y esper\u00e9 a que me llamaran. Unos meses m\u00e1s tarde, una voz al otro lado del tel\u00e9fono pronunci\u00f3 las palabras que yo esperaba o\u00edr. Una ni\u00f1a que viv\u00eda en un hospital necesitaba un hogar. <\/p>\n\n

Una oleada de emoci\u00f3n recorri\u00f3 mi ser y las l\u00e1grimas inundaron mi rostro. \u00abPor fin voy a ser padre\u00bb, gritaba mi mente. Viaj\u00e9 al hospital para la reuni\u00f3n oficial, lleno de ilusi\u00f3n. Los funcionarios me sentaron y me explicaron la situaci\u00f3n. Esta ni\u00f1a de 18 meses ya era una sobreviviente. Sufri\u00f3 problemas intestinales que estuvieron a punto de causarle la muerte. Vivi\u00f3 en el hospital durante a\u00f1o y medio mientras se curaba. En cuanto escuch\u00e9 su historia, sent\u00ed la urgencia de estar a su lado. <\/p>\n\n

En cuanto vi a Mia, supe que la amar\u00eda toda mi vida. <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Me sent\u00e9 en la habitaci\u00f3n con el agente en el hospital, respondiendo a todas las preguntas de la entrevista; pero cuando sal\u00ed, mi confianza disminuy\u00f3. Me preocupaba que no sucediera. Quince minutos despu\u00e9s, son\u00f3 el tel\u00e9fono. Mientras estaba afuera escuchando las palabras: \u00abfuiste elegido\u00bb, me invadi\u00f3 una conmoci\u00f3n total. En ning\u00fan otro momento de mi vida hab\u00eda sentido tanta alegr\u00eda. \u00ab\u00bfQuer\u00e9s conocer a Mia?\u00bb, me preguntaron. Grit\u00e9: \u00abS\u00ed\u00bb, y volv\u00ed corriendo al hospital.<\/p>\n\n

Abr\u00ed la puerta del consultorio y vi a Mia, en brazos de la enfermera, y se me llenaron los ojos de l\u00e1grimas. Me repet\u00eda una y otra vez: \u00abSos hermosa\u00bb. Aunque Mia a\u00fan no pod\u00eda andar ni hablar, me gui\u00f3 en todo momento. Al ser tan joven y fr\u00e1gil, necesitaban mantenerla en el hospital un poco m\u00e1s. Todos los d\u00edas, despu\u00e9s del trabajo, corr\u00eda a su lado. <\/p>\n

En mi tercera visita, me permitieron ir a verla al parque infantil, un lugar del hospital donde jugaba con los dem\u00e1s ni\u00f1os. Mientras caminaba por el pasillo hacia ella, Mia escuch\u00f3 mis pasos. Sac\u00f3 la cabeza para ver qui\u00e9n era. Cuando Mia me vio llegar, una enorme sonrisa se form\u00f3 en su hermoso rostro. Dej\u00f3 todo y gate\u00f3 hacia m\u00ed. En ese momento, qued\u00f3 claro: nos elegimos el uno al otro. <\/p>\n\n

Justo en ese momento, en el pasillo del hospital, cumpli\u00f3 mi sue\u00f1o. Todav\u00eda siento una alegr\u00eda desbordante cada vez que recuerdo nuestro primer encuentro. Hoy vivo feliz con mi preciosa hija Mia en nuestro maravilloso hogar. Parece que estaba destinado a ser as\u00ed. Todo lo que viv\u00ed en mi vida, me llev\u00f3 a Mia.
