Betty Dur\u00e1n, 25, is a young kewi\u00f1a guardian who tends to her villages nurseries as a member of the Chiaraje community in Cocapata, Bolivia. She was born in Cocapata and migrated to Marquina, two hours away, to attend school, but she returned to her village when she became a mother. Since 2022 she has been part of the Warmis Kewi\u00f1as – a group of Bolivian indigenous woman working with NGOs to restore the forest, and she leads the care of the native species nursery.<\/div><\/div>
Background Information<\/div>
Reforestation is increasingly necessary as the effects of climate change becomes more evident and its consequences become more visible. Increased human activity and the subsequent release of greenhouse gases (GHGs), especially CO2, cause the planet to heat up, changing weather patterns and devastating ecosystems. Addressing biodiversity loss, already a global crisis similar to that of climate change, is becoming increasingly urgent. Extinction rates increase with an estimated one million species at risk of disappearing, many of these within a matter of decades. The collapse of ecosystems not only threatens animals and plants but endangers the food and water supplies on which humans depend. Cochabamba is home to forest formations that are among the highest in the world. Its most representative tree is the Kewi\u00f1a, which can live at altitudes of more than 4,000 meters. The high Andean forests form an ecosystem rich in plant and animal species. However, deforestation, urbanization, the planting of exotic species, and climate change have highly threatened them. <\/p>The kewi\u00f1as act like water factories and protect the soil. Since we have no electricity, their secondary purpose as firewood sustains our lives. Degraded over hundreds of years, we witnessed the consequences of their deterioration. Now we watch in awe as these ancient trees \u2013 the guardians of the water \u2013 form a thick mist that floats above them forming clouds.\n\n

<\/p>In this mountainous landscape, community defies climate change, restores ancient plants<\/strong>\n\n

Enclavada en la cuarta ciudad m\u00e1s grande de Bolivia, Cochabamba, se encuentra la sede de la ONG FaunAgua<\/a>. [FaunAgua realiza estudios y proyectos en torno a los recursos naturales, la gesti\u00f3n del agua y la protecci\u00f3n y defensa de \u00e1reas protegidas y territorios ind\u00edgenas]. A cuatro horas en coche de su sede, hay un pueblecito en medio de la cordillera de los Andes llamado Chiaraje. Esta comunidad rural de 50 familias ind\u00edgenas sobrevive de la agricultura y la ganader\u00eda. <\/p>\n\n

<\/p>In this setting lives the kewi\u00f1as plant – synonymous with opportunity. These ancient plants provide firewood and medicine, and through their restoration, attract water. My community now partners with FaunAgua in a forest restoration project that allows us to create kewi\u00f1as nurseries, but the project does even more than that. Many in our community are now learning to read and write.\n\n

<\/p>

<\/p>In this mountainous landscape with its enormous brownstones mingling with pastures, we walk to the nurseries through winding paths, at great altitudes. Many in the community spend two to three hours at a time there, even amidst the strong winds that shake the region and cold temperatures in the morning and at night. \n\n

<\/p>

<\/p>Seeking to counteract the effects of climate change, we rescue the plants and they in turn save us. The kewi\u00f1as have given us other gifts as well: the opportunity to be together, witnessing the miracle of tiny plants as they grow and germinate on the rocks, and a strengthened community with purpose and dreams.\n\n

<\/p>

<\/p>Climate change endangers the very survival of our community as we witnessed the blurring of seasons and deforestation. With it, each year, the water diminishes more and more and the land dries up while everything dies. Now, we plant by bristles, seeds, or cuttings, small stems that we select from the trees. We do this after the December rains while the ground is wet. We take these blessings in our hands and deposit them in the earth.\u00a0 \n\n

Tras un periodo de espera de 10 meses, las pl\u00e1ntulas de kewi\u00f1as del vivero alcanzan entre 20 y 30 cent\u00edmetros de altura. Llega el momento de llevarlos a su destino. Nos reunimos en el vivero con picos y palas y removemos la tierra, extrayendo cuidadosamente cada planta de kewi\u00f1a. Luego, preparamos nuestros aguayos [bright rectangular cloths used to carry things] y su presencia ilumina la tierra de color. Agrupamos los plantones y nos los llevamos a la espalda. Todos y cada uno de los miembros de la comunidad que participan estallan de alegr\u00eda al contemplar el fruto de este trabajo, poniendo rumbo a la zona de reforestaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n

En Bolivia, enero marca la estaci\u00f3n de las lluvias, una \u00e9poca ideal para la siembra. Toda la comunidad se implica en la tarea. Subimos y bajamos la colina, situada a m\u00e1s de 4.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar. La campa\u00f1a de reforestaci\u00f3n parece una fiesta porque re\u00fane a toda la comunidad. Compartimos comida, m\u00fasica, baile y trabajo. Digo unas palabras mientras una enorme sonrisa aparece en mi rostro. <\/p>\n\n

Con mi falda al viento, mi camisa bordada, mi camisa amarillo y mi sombrero negro, me siento envuelta en magia. La lluvia empieza a caer suavemente y la temperatura desciende mientras marchamos por la ladera de la monta\u00f1a hasta llegar a la cima, formando un gran c\u00edrculo y cogidos de la mano. Uno a uno, nos arrodillamos ante la tierra mientras le hablo a la Pacha mama o madre tierra, d\u00e1ndole las gracias.<\/p>\n\n

Le digo: \u00abAqu\u00ed te dejo para que crezcas, arbolito; s\u00e9 fuerte y grande\u00bb. Depositamos los \u00e1rboles en el vientre de la tierra – cada planta que vimos crecer, aportando nuestro amor. Mientras cae la lluvia, siento en mi cuerpo una energ\u00eda que ilumina la vida, un buen y emocionante presagio. <\/p>\n\n

Plantar 25.000 kewi\u00f1as en dos d\u00edas: un alarde de fuerza y esfuerzo <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Tras finalizar el ritual de reforestaci\u00f3n del kewi\u00f1a, bajamos la colina y regresamos al punto de encuentro. La lluvia desaparece lentamente y el sol sale por las monta\u00f1as, atravesando el bosque con sus rayos. Compartimos la comida que hemos cocinado utilizando piedras calientes, incluida carne de llama, patatas y pl\u00e1tanos, mientras todos nos miramos, compartiendo un momento de alegr\u00eda. <\/p>\n\n

Un impacto secundario de este proyecto incluye la alfabetizaci\u00f3n de la comunidad, especialmente de las mujeres mayores. Durante un tiempo, las mujeres que no sab\u00edan leer dudaron en participar en las actividades por verg\u00fcenza.
